Who should participate?
This activity is designed for health-care providers, of any discipline, who
provide care to patients with cancer.

Overview
This continuing education course aims to prepare the learner to assist
cancer patients and their family members with tobacco cessation. It discusses
the epidemiology of tobacco use and tobacco-related disease, the impact of
tobacco use on the development of cancer and its treatment (surgery, radiation,
chemotherapy), and behavioral and pharmacologic strategies for quitting.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the pharmacologic mechanism of nicotine.
- Describe the impact of
smoking on cancer therapy (chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery).
- List the US Public Health Service 5 A’s for tobacco cessation counseling.
- Describe the methods for referring a patient to the tobacco cessation quit line.
- Recommend an appropriate pharmacologic agent for smoking cessation.
